Clean Current Awarded Berth at Nova
Scotia Fundy Institute of Tidal Energy
Parsborough, Nova Scotia – Clean
Current Power Systems Incorporated (Clean Current), a Canadian tidal
energy technology developer, has been selected as one of the three
technologies that will be demonstrated in the Bay of Fundy at the
newly created Fundy Institute of Tidal Energy. Seven technologies
were submitted to the Nova Scotia Energy Tender Office on November
19, 2007. Following technical evaluation, Clean Current was the only
Canadian technology chosen.
The announcement was made today by
Premier Rodney
MacDonald at a news conference in Parsborough, Nova Scotia.
“These companies know what we know -
the Bay of Fundy is one of the world’s best sites for tidal
development,” said Premier Rodney MacDonald, “and today we are a
step closer to proving it". The Fundy Tidal Centre will become a
landmark centre of excellence in our efforts to provide cleaner
sources of energy.”
Clean Current ‘s commercial
demonstration project includes the site specific design,
fabrication, installation, operation and monitoring of a 17 metre
blade diameter turbine generator, the Clean Current Mark III, that
is capable of delivering 400 GW hours of electricity in a year. If a
typical domestic residence uses 10,000 kilowatt hours in a year,
then one Clean Current Mark III will service 400 homes. Deployed in
a farm of 200 units in the Bay of Fundy, 80,000 homes could be
serviced with renewable, predictable, emission free electricity.
Clean Current holds the world’s
largest portfolio of granted patents related to in-stream tidal
energy extraction. Clean Current’s proprietary technology consists
of a horizontal axis ducted turbine with a direct drive variable
speed permanent magnet generator. The turbine generator is equally
efficient in both directions to fully utilize tidal currents that
reverse twice each day. The commercial scale demonstration unit is
expected to be operational during the third quarter of 2009.
“The Clean Current Mark III turbine
is simple, efficient and environmentally friendly. It is poised to
become the leading deep water tidal technology in the world,” said
Glen Darou, Clean Current’s President and CEO, adding “Nova Scotia
is demonstrating strong leadership in sponsoring this world class
demonstration site. Clean Current is delighted to be part of this
history-making event and to continue to build on our marine
experience by deploying this commercial scale turbine here in Nova
Scotia.”
